Hi! I thought I would give you an update on the dog we adopted, Grace.. We adopted Grace back in May of 2008. She is such a sweet dog! Over the summer she absolutely loved going swimming in the pool. She went for a swim every morning and at least once again at night.. As the weather started cooling off, she got her water "fix" from jumping in the shower every time the shower was on. She's just hilarious! She loves our trips to the dog park and can always be found right there with the quickest of the dogs. She sleeps right in between my husband and I at night. She will always jump up on the couch for extra snuggle time whenever she can. We are completely in love with our little Grace. She's just the best! Thank you Waggin Tails for all that you do and thank you to Krystal for taking such good care of Grace as her foster mom. We are thankf ul every day that you saved our little Gracie!! I've attached a few pictures for you too. As you can see, she loves her doggie siblings too. She loves to cuddle with them!

Thanks again!

Dear Foster Mom Lori,

Today I graduated from Puppy School at Pet Smart (see my very handsome picture with mom and dad). We did games and I won 3 out of 5 games and there were 7 other dogs. I did sit-stay the longest, come the fastest and did the doggie track. I even sent a picture of my girlfriend for you. She’s smaller than me, but I love her! I gave her my red ball in class today.

I just wanted to say thanks for taking care of me until I got a great home and got to go to puppy school. I'm loving life!!!

Yours Truely,
Otis Halsey

 Georgia (Ginger)

My husband always said that we would NEVER get a dog----too much responsibility. We previously had a cat that we just adored for 13 years.Well, persistent person that I am, I approachedhim about getting a dog as a birthday presentfor me.

We went to an adoption day at Petsmart and got to meet Ginger and the next weekend she came for a day visit.Although I know it was hard for Jodie (her foster mom)to see Ginger go, we signed the papers that day and Ginger stayed. Within a couple of days she was in our bed sleeping next to me,however she wouldn't stay in bed with Bill if I got up.My how things have changed! The one who didn't think we should have a doggie is her main walking buddy----now she sleeps right in between us and wakes Bill up in the morning by laying her feet across his chest when the alarm goes off.I laughingly have told some people (and this is true), there are times when Bill comes to bed and kisses Ginger and forgets about kissing me!!The man who didn't want a dog is absolutely in LOVE withher and the feelings are mutual!!!

The kids (Karl and Hannah)have taught her how to shake hands, dance on two feet, and do high fives. She is VERY much a devoted and loving family dog.She "owns" us just as much as we "own" her and boy, does she let us know that.We just cannot tell you how much she has been a blessingto our family. We are so thankful to Waggin' Tails for rescuing her from Georgia and bringing her to Michigan so that she could be a part of our family.Even her extended family loves her to death. Shehas a Grandma who spoils her rotten just likeone of the"grandkids" (the "bling-bling" on her neck is compliments of Grandma).Gingeris greatly Loved!!!!

Sincerely,
The Wittkopps - (Bill, Cindy, Karl, Hannah and Ginger)

 Chang (Harper)

We adopted Harper in April 2007. He came from a terrible situation up north and had never been socialized because he probably never had left the pen your group had rescued him from. He was extremely shy and timid running at the sound of anything. Andy and I had gone to the Petsmart to get supplies and look at dogs too. We had been looking for 6 months or more for a companion for our dog, Marley. Marley was a rescue dog who had lived in a pack but had been very neglected. His desire to have another dog was driving us crazy so we had been looking forever for a friend. We had walked a lot of dogs in those six months but no dog had caught our eye. When I saw Harper (at the time Chang) I was in love with his beautiful mane and a gorgeous coat. I have always had a thing for the fluffy ones. He seemed nervous but I sat on the floor and pet him for over a half and hour while I talked to Jennifer his foster mom. She brought Harper/Chang for a visit the following week and the love continued. He followed our alpha cat, Isis around the house the entire time. Jennifer let us adopt him right on the spot. He became Harper that day.

From the beginning it was obvious he had not been socialized very well if at all When Andy would stand up Harper would run into another room. His head was always low and when you would pet him he would turn away (I don't think he knew what pets were). He ran from every sound, especially the coffee maker. With patience he has become a totally different dog, he still shies away from new people at first but get out the leash and he is your best friend. When we go on walks his tail is in the air and a smile is on his face. He is happiest when outside running free at the dog park with his brother Marley. He and Marley are a terrible twosome always causing some sort of mischief. I think they would be great characters in a movie. They are the best of friends, wrestling and playing every day. Harper also loves his kitty siblings as well.

I call him my chowtriever because he is a golden-chow mix, Andy calls him Sundog. Whenever I take Harper anywhere people always say he is the most beautiful dog they have seen. I would agree but I think what makes him truly beautiful is that he is a gentle lion, a friend and most of all the one and only, Harper. Thank you so much for the chance to add Harper to our family. Life would not be the same without him.

I'm not real good with a camera, but I've attached a couple of pictures for you guys.

Sincerely,
Tia Butler

Hey there, it's me Oscar!! I'm just dropping in to let everyone know that I am doing "GREAT" in my new forever home. I admit I was a bit leery at first, not knowing who this couple was and what was going on. The first few days I was very shy but I'm coming around quite well if I do say so myself. They take me out for walks at least twice a day and they even took me out to this awesome spot near the lake. I think it was called the Highland Recreational Center . I was too busy to care about the name of the joint. I was checking everything out and use'n my sniffer to take in all that fresh air. I even saw a bunch of deer!! I thought I was a big deer hunter at that point and tried to track them the rest of the way. I'm really looking forward to this Summer. They tell me that they will take me camping up North near Traverse City where my mom is from and to a place called Hessel somewhere in the U.P. I'll get to go swimming, boating, fishing and even kayaking/canoeing!! I'm sooooo psyched and can hardly wait for warm weather to hit.

I've met lots of new friends which is helping me to get over some of my shyness. The very first weekend with my new family I met a puggle named Guinness. Her parents brought her over to welcome me home and for a little play date. Guinness even brought me a welcome home squeaky toy that read "Mail-Man" on it. HaHaHaHa...get it??...MAIL-MAN!!!... Ohhhh man, I crack myself up. I played a little, but was a bit standoffish. I stayed by my new mom and dad most of the time. I'm discovering that I have some new relatives as well. A one eyed Beagle/BlueTick bandit named Jack. He too was rescued, just like me! He is blind in one because of injury that he got from stick (OUCH). Let me tell ya, it doesn't slow him down in the least. We have had a blast playing in the backyard and he even taught me how to use the doggie door. I met Sadie my younger Siamese cousin, but she kept her distance from me. Not sure why..??.. Hope she warms up to me. I have another cousin named Ellie that I will get to meet soon. She is an older gal, a yellow lab in her teens, but I hear she still has a lot of spunk in those paws. My parents have been playing ball with me and working with me so I know it's okay to have fun and I know how much "having fun" is. I have quite a few toys to keep me busy (tennis balls, chewies, squeakies, and a teddy bear I like to call Mr. Bo-Jangles). If I had to choose, I would have to say that my tennis balls and my teddy are my faves. I have a bed of my own in their room and I take my teddy to bed with me every night.

I hear my parents talk every now and again and they say that they couldn't have gotten a better "furry baby" than me and that they feel very fortunate to have me in their lives. It makes me feel pretty good. Well, gotta run for now. Thanks again for all that you guys do at Waggin' Tails Rescue and all that you have done for me. Without you guys, the three of us wouldn't be as happy as we are today.

I'm not real good with a camera, but I've attached a couple of pictures for you guys.

Forever thankful,
-Love
Oscar

We had such a wonderful experience with Waggin' Tales and our puppies' foster mom Leza. It was so wonderful and exciting to have her come to our home, with puppies in hand to visit and talk about our wish to adopt. She really made us feel comfortable about taking on the responsibility of a dog. She was very reassuring and supportive, sharing her experiences and expertise about training tips that work for her and her dogs. She knew the dogs personalities well and was very invested in finding the right home for them. We are so happy with our dog Bella. We love her to pieces and couldn't imagine our lives without her. It is so true that having a furry friend awakens a part of your soul.

 Bina (Sabrina)

Bill and I adopted Bina a year ago. Bina was named Sabrina, but we called her Bina because Leza, her foster mom, called her that. We had lost our big girl dog, Megan, a year earlier and our boy dogs, Toby and Casey, were fine alone, but I had nagging feelings that we could provide a good home to another rescue dog. All of our dogs are rescue dogs.

We chose Bina for her sweet face. She has a rounded muzzle, giving her a puppy-like appearance. Her cute, semi-erect ears and her black with cinnamon point coloring were also charming. Megan had been a black dog, and we had heard that black dogs were harder to place, so I had been looking at a lot of black dogs on Petfinder. I had been cruising Petfinder for three or four months. Just the previous week, though, I had put in an application for a local dog - purebred Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. When I did not hear back from that rescue, I applied for Bina. Leza called right away, saying that we sounded like a good fit for Bina. We arranged to have them out on Friday night, and if it worked out, Bina could stay and be our dog.

When Leza and Bina came, we were smitten. Bina was so very shy, but sweet. She met the boy dogs without any problems, though she was not interested in interacting much with them. She clung to Leza, and the bond they had formed in only a couple of weeks was obvious. This was a dog who could receive comfort, and given her lifetime in a kennel, this was a great strength for Bina.

Those first few weeks were so hard for Bina. She didn't trust me - I was the one who was putting her eardrops in every day. I was big and noisy and scarey. But Bill was her man! She followed him everywhere, sitting at his feet and trotting along behind him throughout the house. His calm demeanor and deep, deep quiet voice comforted her. When she was not with him, she circled. She paced and paced. She panted. She breathed so fast and shallowly in her sleep that we were afraid she would hyperventilate. It was months before she could be relaxed and sit with us in the evening without panting or pacing. She had gotten quite fat at the hoarder's kennel, but she paced off all of her excess weight in just a few months. Before too long, Bina was trusting me and even her grandpa, Bill's dad, who shares our home. When Dad had a health setback, his room became the center of activity at our house and Bina had to get used to caregivers and visiting nurses and relatives here all the time. This actually was a big positive for Miss Bina. She learned to trust, and like, and even love more people. She is now a comical girl whose tail is always wagging. She adores attention from her family and friends. She spends a lot of the day in her grandpa's room, usually laying between his walker legs. In the morning and evening you can see her trotting behind her Daddy. She prances with her tail in the air and her knees doing the short, high steps like a Lipizzaner Stallion in dressage. Her joy at life is exhibited throughout the day as she jumps in the air and does play bows while her dinner is being made, bounds happily back into the house after doing her business outside, or nuzzles for someone to pet her. Her little ear flaps bounce when she runs and trots, with her furry toes high in the air! Sometimes, even at night I can hear her wiggling on her back in her bed, kicking and scratching her back in contentment. Every day that she is alive you can see the joy she has learned from the volunteers at Waggin' Tails, who gave her a new life, outside of a cage.

 Buster

Dear Waggin' Tails,

I am happier than I've ever been before, thanks to you! My first family didn't care enough about me or my canine brother to take us with them when they moved. Luckily, the landlord came in and found us both and took us to the local shelter. Because I am not as young as other dogs, I didn't have much time. Thankfully, a representative from Waggin' Tails came by and realized how much love I still have to give and gave me a second chance at life.

Since arriving to my new home in June 2007, I've settled in well with my new family – Stephen, Kari & Cleo (see enclosed picture). Every evening, we go on a walk around the subdivision. I've made friends (as well as not-so-friendly acquaintances) with some of the other dogs in the neighborhood. After a walk Stephen will play with me with my squeaky bone or my laughing koala bear. I run all the way down the hallway and back to fetch the toy. I especially enjoy visiting with my "cousin" Kimmie, who is Kari's parents'dog. We are both old dogs but enjoy playing together and going for walks.

Some people have guessed that I'm as young as 5 years old, but others have estimated I'm between 8 and 9 years. I'm not telling! I like to act like both – I have a great mix of playfulness and laziness. I like to keep Kari and Stephen guessing. Regardless, I'm so happy and thankful that I get to spend the rest of my life with my two favorite people, favorite feline friend, and the best cousin ever.

Thanks, Waggin' Tails, for giving this old guy another chance!
XOXO, Buster

 Watson

Thank you so much in helping to find the right dog for our family. We had a very positive experience with Waggin' Tails Dog Rescue, and we can't imagine life without Watson as part of our active brood!

With 3 young boys, our primary goal was to find a dog that had agreat temperament and could go with the flow of our busy lives. Watson is exactly that dog! We take him everywhere that will allow a dog,and he is so easy going and enjoyable. He loves riding in the car and his favorite "spot" is on my 7 year old son's lap. He also comes with us for the kids’soccer games and practices, and Tae Kwon Do classes. Watson is quite popular at our elementary school as he walks with us to drop the boys off and pick them up each day. We also take him on bike rides with us. He just loves to run! Watson has been on camping trips with us and sleeps great in the tent. He will be going on our family vacation with us to upstate NY in August and will get to meet 2 of his doggie cousins for the first time.

Watson has recently started accompanying my husband, Doug, on his training runs. Watson goes to the track with Doug at 5a.m. and they run the track together for speed workouts. Watson will wander off to chase the occasional critter but always comes back to Doug. He also loves to go on distance runs through Hines Park early in the morning. Doug enjoys having a buddy that can keep up with him, and being part Brittany Spaniel, Watson seems to thrive on the exercise and activity.

We have recently started obedience classes and Watson is doing so well. He is so food motivated that he is very easy to train and prefers to pay attention to me rather than to other dogs in class, in orderto get that positive reward, a treat!

We can't thank you enough for all the good work that you do! We have recommended Waggin'Tails Dog Rescue to several friends and neighbors for when they are ready to add a dog to their family. Watson was given up by someone who could not care of him as a puppy, and their loss was definitely our family's gain!

The Ware Family
Jen, Doug, Alex (age 7), Adam (age 4.5) and Ryan (age 4.5)

 Juneau

Juneau came to Waggin' Tails from a hoarder. She lived in a cage for years where she received no veterinary attention and little human interaction. When she came into rescue it was discovered that she had several rotten teeth and probably suffered for a few years in terrible pain. If that wasn't bad enough, because she never really socialized well with humans, she was very afraid. Thankfully she was a gentle and sweet dog that slowly learned that life could be good. She lived in foster care for several months and finally found her forever home with a family that was dedicated to patiently working with her to help her overcome her fears and live the life every dog should get. Read Juneau's Happy Tail below!

Juneau has gone on 3 camping trips with us and is still shy but we are working with her. She has become best friend with our other dog Shadow. She has learned that our bed is her second best friend during the day. We are taking her for her walks and she is even teaching Shadow some walking manners. She is now coming to the door to see who is coming in but she won't physically come to greet us yet. Over Memorial weekend we took her up north to camp with my brother-in-law and they had 4 dogs and she got along very well with them. She does like to take Lori's spot in the passenger side in our camper and she runs to the bed to claim her spot. Lori is working with her sit and lay commands and not to coward down when approached. We will let her out at night she walks around proud and she is beautiful, but otherwise still working on the tail coming up. But we love her and are so glad we made the choice to adopt her.

Thanks

 Loki

Waggin' Tails is so glad to hear from Loki's new adoptive family. Below is what his adoptive Mom, Sandy Prebenda, wrote to us:

Loki's first two nights with us have gone so well I'm wondering if we should change his name to "Lucky"! Just kidding...we love his name "Loki" - that name will stay with him...but we feel so happy, lucky, and blessed to have inherited such a well-behaved and sweet loving dog. No doubt, training for him and we three will be forthcoming, but he already has in place attentive response to commands and will surely prove to be sooooooooo smart in! And...I'm telling you what you already know!

Just as you said, he gets up in the AM (around 6:30 first morning and 7 AM this morning), eats, and goes out side to "take care of business". We will stay on "poop" patrol! Ryan is a little disappointed because LOKI has not slept in the "den" he built for him in his room but has preferred to sleep on the floor by my bed. It is tough because Ryan is the first one to bed and LOKI wants to be up with Morgan and I. When we finally go to bed, LOKI goes to bed, and we block the top of the stairs. I tried to coerce LOKI to stay in Ryan's room's "den" by putting a treat in it, but that doesn't work. LOKI seems to gravitate to my room and it makes sense because he slept in your room. Nonetheless, LOKI joins Ryan on his bed for bed-time prayers along with Morgan too and LOKI hangs out with them when getting dressed before school...and is already so happy to greet us when we come home. The crate is working out just fine.

Yesterday he greeted Morgan and Ryan at the bus stop...happy moment for all! I've never seen the kids run so fast off the bus! So...LOKI got his first "sniff" of our neighborhood and rubbed noses with playmate-to-be "Spiro" (gradual introductions). This morning was a new adventure for him - he rode in the car to take the kids to school. I was prepared for his motion sickness but he was just fine...He preferred to bark and whine at dogs that came into his view. I could tell he just wanted to play with them!

LOKI runs, or should we say long-stride-bounds, sooooooo fast! Ryan was playing with him in the backyard in the snow this AM before school with the ball and an old purple glove LOKI dug out from underneath the snow we didn't know was there! LOKI preferred thrashing around with the glove...so it went...Ryan throws ball, LOKI brings him glove, Ryan throws glove, LOKI brings him ball...

Last night LOKI layed by and on Morgan on the couch as she studied for a test! It was so cute because LOKI would nudge the books just a little bit. A few minutes would go by and then he'd nudge her books a bit more...as if to say, "Screw these books and pet ME!" She was laughing...she knew exactly what he was doing.

This weekend will be filled with LOKI going to the "dog wash" and loads more playtime and more introductions to this new world around him than the weekdays bring. I'll be checking into training registration too.

I have to tell you that both the kids got teary-eyed and emotional immediately after you left our house. They were so happy to have LOKI but felt bad because they knew you were sad to let LOKI go. They both asked if we'd see you guys again. So, if/when you feel a reconnection is in the best interest of ALL, we'd welcome it....when/if the time is right - I honor your judgment on this.

I cannot express my gratitude and thanks to you and Waggin' Tails enough. I'm sure it wasn't easy to let him go but if you could see the smiles of newly-found happiness on the kids faces, sense the "voids" that LOKI has now filled, and see the beginnings of bonds forming, you'd feel pride and have a peaceful heart knowing the gifts you've given us that only LOKI could bring. Our hearts are smiling and yours should be too!

I'll stay in touch!

~Sandy

 Layla

Lyn, my new mother, was asked to write a few sentences on the adoption that recently took place thru waggin' tails whereupon I became part of their family. I think it is much more appropriate to give my perspective.... from a beagle's point of view ... and how I came to adopt Lyn.

I came to waggin' tails thru the compassionate foresight of a police officer who found me injured and wandering homeless. Rather than just dropping me off at the high-kill shelter, she left her personal phone number and kept track of me. Rescue showed up none-too-soon as the usual time life on death row is short, and I was fortunate to be placed with foster parent, Sandy - me and all my medical issues, which included a ruptured disc and partial blindness.

My recuperation left me a special needs child - some might say, handicapped. My new mom says I have great insight, and that's better than 20/20 vision any time. My ruptured disc healed and left me with a comical gait. When I walk, it looks like the back end is on a totally different program than the front end.

Nonetheless, all the important things are perfectly normal; I can still sniff out varmints and have successfully 'treed' the family cats to the top of the piano many a time. I can BARK REAL LOUD alerting the entire family that the mailman has made a delivery to our box. I can dig a really nice hole in the back garden, love car rides, sleeping on the couch with dad on a sunday afternoon.... and not the least of these, giving marvelous wonderful exceptional everlasting unconditional love to Lyn, my mother whom I adopted - who wouldn't trade me for a million dollars and thinks I am the best beagle the world has ever known.

Layla and her Daddy, click to enlarge

There is something to be said about adoption of someone with special needs... Though waggin' tails labeled me with this, I found in adopting Lyn, she is really the one with special needs....

... She needed a furry family member to accompany her when she traveled alone researching her writing projects, making the journey shorter and filled with pleasure because I was there to share the time with her... She needed a companion laying contently by her desk while she did her writing ... And curled up under a comforter when she read her books ... And scurrying over the 18 acre farm with her when she took walks thru the cornfield, alerting her with beagle yelps of glee when the scent of a rabbit came rushing by. As a human person she'd miss half of what life has to offer if I were not there - the beagle, the furry friendly fabulous presence in her life, the wet kisses that wake her in the morning, my snuggly softness that sleeps close and my unconditional love and acceptance that encompasses her life and fills it with unsurmountable joy.

Now... you tell me ... who really made out best in this adoption?

 Shadow

The Quaglia family (Kevin, Patty, Anthony - age 9, and Dominic - age 3), of Fraser, MI are thrilled to have a new addition to our family - a beautiful Black Labrador named Shadow! Our path to adopting Shadow is a long one, dating back to the September 21, 2001 loss of our beloved German Shepherd, Toby. For many years our children have pleaded with us to get a dog. However, it wasn't until early in 2007 that we found ourselves in a position where the time seemed right to add a dog to our family.

We began searching pet adoption websites for the "perfect" dog for our family. We really wanted to adopt a dog from a rescue organization - to give one of those dogs a chance at a good, happy life in a loving home. On Sunday morning (2/25/07), I believe fate brought me to a website featuring a dog named "Shadow", whose pictures melted my heart! Even the name "Shadow" is special to us - as it is one of the main characters in one of our children's favorite movies "Homeward Bound". After corresponding with Shadow's foster Mom, Sandra, I was convinced that we had found our new dog!

The adoption process through Waggin' Tails was very simple and efficiently handled. Sandra was a pleasure to work with in the days leading up to our adoption of Shadow on Friday, March 2, 2007. Once our application was approved, we scheduled the home visit, which went beautifully. Shadow seemed to take to our boys immediately, and our boys returned the affection. After meeting Shadow, we couldn't wait to move forward and bring Shadow into our home forever!

It has only been a few days since Shadow became a Quaglia, but in that short time he has made his place in our family (he's pretty much at the center of it right now!!), and he fits right in as if he's been with us since he was a baby! Our boys are so happy to have Shadow, and they are both taking turns (with a surprising amount of compromise and good-will) in caring for Shadow. As we expected, our oldest son, Anthony is the closest to Shadow. Anthony has always had a tremendous heart for animals - especially dogs. Anthony and Shadow have already formed a bond that I would have expected to take much longer to achieve. Shadow is welcomed into, and gladly sleeps in Anthony's bed each night - and he follows Anthony and his friends everywhere! Anthony has had a steady flow of friends stopping by to meet and play with Shadow, which seems to be met with lots of enthusiasm and gratitude by Shadow!

Dominic (AKA "D") has surprised us in his own little ways. He's always been a bit apprehensive of dogs. However, he is completely at ease with Shadow. He helps out in feeding Shadow his dinner, and is always in the cupboard sneaking treats to him! D has become very nurturing toward Shadow - a side of our little 3 year old that we have never seen before. It's very sweet to watch the two of them together.

Shadow has turned out to be the perfect addition to our family! He's gentle and playful with the children, well behaved, housebroken, and very loving toward our entire family (and anyone else who happens to come by). We couldn't be happier with our decision to adopt Shadow. He has adjusted to our family beautifully - which might be a challenge for some people... let alone a dog! It really feels as if he's been with our family for quite some time... and he most certainly has found his forever family in us!
